“[The function carried by our Opposing Personality] loses its complexity and becomes one negative assumption that is not usually accurate.” -- John Beebe, Portraits of Personality, 2009 Type Resources Webinar

Surviving the Titanic: When Type Threatens to Sink the Ship

Surviving the Titanic: When Type Threatens to Sink the Ship

presented by

Ann Loomis (ESFP) and Walter Smith (INFJ)

Approved for 3 MBTI Master Practitioner, APA and NBCC credits.

Brief Overview:    As Type practitioners, we emphasize the gifts of each type, and rightly so.  But how do we deal with the pain of type that comes from working with people whose type conflicts with ours, and with the pain of our own type when it makes us aware of our deficiencies?  This session will offer ways to deal with the pain of type primarily through accessing what Carl Jung called the feminine principle.

Session Description

With the lifeboat of the feminine principle, this session will offer ways to deal with the pain of type when it threatens to sink the ship of our relationships, careers, and our emotional well-being. In introducing and elaborating upon the feminine, we will draw on such classic movies as “Titanic” and “Vertigo,” as well as real-life and mythological stories.

While Type can lead to a greater understanding and appreciation of others, it can also lead to pain and distrust. Extraverts feel pain when their introverted partner refuses to attend social events. Extraverted feeling types suffer when their introverted feeling (or thinking) partner does not come forth with warm words and affection. Extraverts who need to stay constantly active and engaged may overshadow and inhibit introverts, while introverts who are reluctant to express their views may deny the extravert the stimulus needed.

Pain can also occur with our own type. We all are generally aware of our type qualities that we like and don’t like, but those qualities we wish we had can also be a source of pain. Intuitive types may wish they could be more present to their surroundings and remember the details of their lives, while sensing types may wish to pick up on the deeper meaning of events they so easily remember. So the question is not how do we avoid the pain of type, but how do we handle the pain of type?

The interactive part of this session includes writing from visual and word prompts, small group dialogue, and large group discussion with time allowed for questions and answers.

Objectives: By the end of the session participants will be able to:

  1. Identify and explain the feminine principle.
  2. Offer examples of the feminine from literature, movies, and real life.
  3. Describe how the feminine helps to heal the pain of Type.
  4. Access the feminine with visual and word prompts.
