The Communication Wheel

A Workshop in Understanding the Ways We Communicate

For Beginners and Those With Type Knowledge

Presented by:

Walter R. Smith

and

Karen Ridout

Certified Interpreters of the Communication Wheel™

Master Practitioners of the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator®

Have you ever heard someone speak English, knew all the words the person used, but didn’t understand what the person said? Have you ever received a compliment that made you feel good? Have you ever received one that you felt was phony? Has anyone ever told you your ideas were stupid and you thought it was an insult, but the person who said it did not see it as an insult?

These are examples that the words we use do not mean the same thing to other people. The Communication Wheel™, based on the Myers-Briggs Indicator®, allows us to identify the different languages we speak: Sensing, Intuiting, Feeling, and Thinking, and to learn ways to speak more effectively with others. You do not need to know the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator® to participate in this workshop.

Using a combination of videotapes of speakers of different types, lecture, and live examples, this workshop will show you how to:

  • Explain the key factors in communication.
  • Identify the basic Type languages.
  • Identify your own communication preferences and how they help or hinder you.
  • Experience a human communication wheel.

The Communication Wheel™

Additional Information

Based on the Myers Briggs Type Indicator®, (MBTI), the Communication Wheel™ (CW) theorizes that we speak four different languages: Sensing, Intuiting, Thinking, and Feeling.  Each of these languages has its own distinctive communication pattern.  By knowing the languages we can identify the language another person is speaking, increase understanding of what is being said, and respond more effectively.

The CW is applicable to all people but is of special use to teachers, Board and committee members, couples (married, engaged, dating), co-workers, supervisors, department chairs, people who make written and verbal reports, pastors preparing sermons and working with governing boards, and counselors. While the CW is based on the MBTI it is not necessary to know the MBTI to benefit from this powerful instrument.

The Communication Wheel was developed by Henry L. Thompson, Ph.D. President and CEO of High Performing Systems, Watkinsville, GA. www.hpsys.com

What participants have said:

“This workshop transformed my spoken communications with my husband, friends, and colleagues, and my written communications to clients or prospective clients. By understanding the preferred language of my prospective clientele, I can better persuade them to buy my services.  Quite simply, this workshop changed the way my brain works and uses language.”

“This workshop has helped me to understand my spouse better and how we can do a better job communicating with each other.”

“Now I understand what my boss is saying.”

“I never liked Tom because he always questioned my proposals. Now I know he was just trying to understand the logic behind them.”

“I never knew my words could hurt other people when all I wanted was to help make things better.”
